Braid line

Braid on the mainline and hook length at the same time can be prone to tangle. That's not to say you can't do it but mono mainline paired with braid hook length or braid main line with mono hook length has less problems. No issues mono to mono.

Braid can be used as a mainline but comes with its own problems, plus its very expensive and needs spooling carefully to avoid tangling. Its often claimed it works out better value for money but it often ends up trashed and tangled requiring replacement.

Mono is much easier to manage and provides a certain amount of cushion to a hard fighting fish.

You can buy special hooklengths of braid for rig making and some of the coated ones will provide everything you need. I have used Kryston Jackal as well as other makes with some good success.

Its no good casting a rig out overnight only to wind in a tangled one in the morning so if you do use a braid hooklink be sure to fit a pva bag or stringer to help avoid tangles.

Good luck

I got into the braid thing through piking and use it for everything else now. It's prone to wind knots now and again but apart from that it's great, you can use a mono leader before your hooklink tied loop to loop or use 2/3ft of rig tube to protect fish and keep the crucial part of the rig on the deck.

Spooling up with braid isn't too bad, just remember to use electrical tape or some mono on the spool before you wind on your braid otherwise the whole lot will rotate!
