What is this ?

cranfiels - I certainly don't mind staying with this issue a while - until it's cured or until you get tired of trying.

If chkdsk didn't run (and it should have taken at least 10 minutes from the time it started to complete and often longer) then something strange is going on. It starts just before the GUI would normally load and gives you a 10 second countdown before starting so you can stop it if you want.

Stay tuned. I want to do a bit of research before the next suggestion. Need to find out what will block chkdsk for one thing. I vaguely remember something but can't call it out of the recesses of memory just now.

As to professional help from a PC shop - this issue is beginning to look a little tricky for the average shop tech and short of a format/reinstall I doubt they'd be able to help. You don't need that sort of 'help' at this point.

OK. Moving along a little/

Do you have pcAnywhere installed?

To get the file system type, open My Computer then right-click on the C: drive icon and go to properties. The first screen should include the type of file system.

What is the full name (name and path) of the problem file?

I do not have pcAnywhere installed.

My File System is "NTFS".

I cannot get the name and path of the problem file, as it doesn,t respond, when I right click (to check properties).

chesters1, are you suggesting I save all of "My Documents" to floppy or CD, except the problem file, uninstall "My Documents" and then reload the clean CD ?

Would that work ?

602 is a word processing software suite ,i think it saves your letters etc in my documents by default (but not sure as mine saves on a different hard drive) .the problem seems to be with this software? (havent a clue why its in german) uninstalling it (the 602pc) running the scan then reinstalling it may help ,but wait for Newts imput if ofcourse you have the 602 cd

i suspect though it might not uninstall the particular problem as it will be "in use" but uninstalling it in safe mode and manually deleting the main folder may do the trick

remember though "grangers law" exists ,"anything i say the opposite happens or nothing at all"

wait for Newt`s reply

Cranfield - you said earlier you had 'found a file'. Where found and called what?

I was hoping you had pcAnywhere because a version of it is known to block chkdsk from running properly.

At this point, just a disk check without any fixing might help give details.

Open My Computer, right-click the C: drive and click properties. You should see an option to check for errors. Do that but without telling it to fix anything. See if you get any warnings about problems.

Then try the same but do tell it to fix errors. You will be told you need to reboot. Hopefully having the error checking routine use autochk to run chkdsk will work better. Tick both the boxes specifying what to fix.
