XP Problem

I'm afraid that I may be facing a similar problem.

I bought the "Upgrade to XP" disc, and upgraded from ME. I registered within the 30-day period.

I now wish to upgrade a second PC from "98" to "XP", using the same disc.

So .. What happens after the 30 days if you do not register?

Are you allowed to only use the software on one PC?

I would think that, as I paid good money for the upgrade disc, I should be able to use it any number of times.

Or does Microsoft recognise the serial number, and the original PC, and put a "block" on it after only one use ?

The Older I get .. The better I was.

That's the biggest issue with Microsoft! Software licences, including operating systems are only valid for one PC unless they are bought as multi-user. The fact that we have been able get away with installing stuff on more than one PC in the past is contrary to these licence agreements.

I've stuck with 2000 for the moment!

When I put the XP disc in, it asks me what I want to do.

Setup XP Professional (MSDN-VLK)

Setup XP Professional (DevilsOwn-VLK)

Setup XP Professional (OEM-DELL)

Setup XP Professional (OEM-Patched)

Setup XP Home (OEM-Patched)

Not sure what to choose!

So what happens if my hard disc crashes, and I have to install XP afresh on a new drive ? Will MS refuse to activated it because it has already been used before ?

No. If you choose to register via the internet, you would in this case be asked to call microsoft (number suppliedby XP), and verify your hardware upgrade.

You are allowed to do this several times.

As newt said, if you read the licence agreement (none of us really do!), you agree to install and use the software on one machine only. Unless you buy XP as a multi licence package ie for office/business use.

Hi, Simon I tried the suggestion in your PM and it's still not having it. It has given me about 7 million days to activate it though so it gives me a bit of breathing space.

I can't respond to your PM until you've read my last one though.

Your help is much appreciated.

Howard.
