Chubbing

Nice to see a chub again! I think the last one I saw was early December... The river is now dropping so contrary to my earlier posts it may be possible to get one last go in before the end of the season. After previous floods the chub have been very hard to catch and stick-thin though, so we'll have to see.

I hope you're right Andrew, but I've just looked at the weather forecast, and we are due some more rain, freezing temps, with the possibility of snow!

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Yes the Thames fish at least just seem to go into survival mode in the flooding, the ones I have had following floods look like they haven't eaten for weeks. The fact they are also so difficult to catch then suggests they still haven't got their appetites back either.

This season has been the worst I've had for ages, a few high points but mainly very poor - a long and very cold spring, roasting hot summer, then months of floods!

  • 2 weeks later...

A quick catch up of recent evening sessions, 3 blanks on the trot at the 'easy' stretch followed last night by a very fat (and very welcome) 5.06 from the 'difficult' stretch. So make of that what you will! It was from a new spot which was pleasing, a nice slow glide on the inside of a shallow bend. Most of the river is still very fast and turbulent.

Back out again later with rich. Fingers crossed...

And some say chub don't have teeth!

We struggled again yesterday. We baited and fished a lot of spots, covering loads of water, for one small one each. It's just not right for some reason, so I am currently wondering whether to bother this evening or not. If I do go later, I won't be expecting much...! Might stay in with a decent bottle of wine instead :)

VERY tough season, this one.

Time after time in my chubbing days I found high pressure days at this time of year flattered to deceive. However I did find that for some reason the chub would often come on the feed after dark, sometimes well after dark.

Well I did go in the end, back to the tricky stretch, and against the odds rounded the season off with a lovely chub of 6.02 - very pleased with that, especially as it was from a section I hadn't yet had a fish from. I got a quick snap with the phone but it's pretty crap:

I'm very happy with that as the last fish of the season :) Roll on next winter...
