Returned from two weeks holiday to 1000 e-mails of the spam variety does anyone know of an effective filter??

i have a so called spam filter with my isp, not very good one. I just tend to be carefull about where i put my email address and where possible i put it as webmaster@<no spam>anyisp.com

(replacing the anyisp with my real isp/domain name)

When i do get spam i find the reply buttun works well and just spam them back

Which just confirms to them that your email address is valid.

They then add that to a list of guaranteed valid email addresses (same as if you try to unsubscribe following their unsusbscribe link) and sell that list onto other spammers.

You get more spam by replying or attempting to unsubscribe.

Much better and more satisfying to report them via Spam Cop

Even worse, some spammers now set the reply to: address to point to an innocent third party, so by replying you are bothering some other innocent user rather than the spammer.

This happened to a customer of mine recently, the guy got over 100,000 emails generated by this in around 24 hours!

I have Mailwasher and it is very effective.

There is a free version, or a donation gets you the Pro version.

It automatically blacklists known spammers.

You generate your own "friends" list.

You can read emails without opening them.

You can bounce spam back, without opening it.

Etc., etc.

I was getting around 20,000 per hour at one point for the very same reason...

MyISP (Tiscali) has a VERY effective spam filter,

anything the least dodgy is put in a Spam folder and I can check them out , OR SIMPLY DELETE THE LOT, which I usually do.

Only problem is that I don't get to hear from Helen or Tricia or......even worse....from my friend Guy in good old US of A anymore.. :D:D
