Wingham Fish-In 2014

I think the last time I fished in a style other than lure fishing was probably last year at Wingham as I've mostly been moving away from this type of fishing..... But with that said Wingham is so special I'm still tempted this year :-). I hope the tench are feeding for everyone this year, it has been a bit of a struggle the last couple if I remember correctly :-(

The thing is you may wait a while but then you may well get a monster on the end of your line . I think somebody had a 10lb + last year. Nice Eel too and it was out of the coarse lake ( i was extremely jelous). And the perch are the most stunning perch i have ever seen in 40 years of fishing and beautiful colourings

It's a good swim if the wind direction favours :)

As there is likely to be some weed around I thought it might be useful to start a conversation about fishing in weedy waters. Anyone got any tips?

For what it is worth, "my mate Ted" uses 18" hook lengths and puts a bit of soluble PVA foam to the hook. This settles slowly after the weight lands and so the bait settles slowly on the weed/silt. Just one of those little "extras" that few bother with.

He catches a LOT of good fish :)

Get on the chod mate :-)

Failing that then PVA, PVA, PVA and more PVA in all it's forms is one of the most simple ways to tackle weed, so I would advise those who may not use it regularly to bring some to Wingham in one form or another. There are numerious ways to use it.

Just a simple small stocking with your hook length threaded through it so the hook point is inside the bag can make a big difference as there is less chance of your hook and bait geting buried or hung up on in the weed. I will also add bits of PVA foam in to the bag to help reduce the speed your end tackle sinks in to the weed and have at times even stuck them to the lead for the same reason. It's well worth experimenting in the margins if the water is clear to see how slow your rig sinks and how quick the PVA melts. The slower for both in general the better when tackling weed. Obviously lighter leads can help, I don't think there is enough PVA in anyones tackle box to slow down a 5 oz lead. A supple hook length material can also be useful along with using a longer hook length then the standard size most people use, this should hopefully allow the hook length to drap over any weed rather then bury in it.

PVA bags with everthing inside hook length, bait and lead is also good as is the most simple tactic of puting a nuggut over the hook. There are endless posabilities with PVA and so are well worth the investment of purchasing some especially for Wingham where at this time of year all the bites will be from good fish so you will not get through a tonne of the stuff.

I also use the FOX predator leads that are encased in foam again to reduce the sinking rate of the rig.

Stephen

What do you guys think of method feeders in weed? does a nice big ball of groundbait disappear into the weed or settle into it more slowly as it's much less dense than lead ?

Feeders in general can cause problems in weed, method feeders especially (just because of their size). I would set up leads to drop off (either a lead clip or tied on with light mono) and avoid feeders, personally. And use light leads.

Longer hooklengths and slow sinking hookbaits too, as others have said.

If using a marker, set it up with a long tail to the lead, to avoid the float getting weeded up and stopping it rising to the surface. Leading around without a float might be better. (Depends on how thick the weed is!)

Plus float fishing :)

Steve, how bad is the weed looking? Presumably this is the aftermath of the mild winter and the herbicide regulation change?
