switched the comp on just now and the comp stoped on the first black page which normaly flashes past. Said press F1 to continue which I did after waiting to see if it was going to proceed by itself. Then says hold on while windows builds a driver base .....which it did ....then continues to load. On start up the clock said 00.20 , It is only 10.20 When I try to sign in anywhere a security notice pops up ....

Security Alert....

information you exchange with this site cannot be viewed or changed by others. However, there is a problem with the sites security certificates.

1) the security certificate is from a trusted company

2) the security certificate has expiredor is not valid yet

3) the security certificate matches the name of the page you are trying to view

Do you want to proceed ?

This comes up for every site Ive tried to site into . Ive clicked no ( I was already signed in here ) until I know whats going on .

Anyone got any ideas ????????

The date going back might mean that the battery is finished and the CMOS setup has been lost! Press the delete key while the screen is still black and have a look.

New battery = c£2.50!

ha new comp is up and running . XP instead of windows 98 and Im already thinking I should have done this months ago. The comp guy that put this one in reckons it is a hardware conflict on the old one but after having a look around it the cheeky sod said the bin was the best place for it.He doubts if the parts are still available and reckons if he replaces parts anyhow, it will just feck up in another part. It will be kept as a spare, once it gets passed the first 5 minutes it runs OK although no where near as fast as this one.

I havnt a clue where to start on a format Tyke. Also Ive no discs ( including windows98 ) for it. A friend who built this in 98 had all the discs but is now living in teneriffe and I doubt he'll fancy a trip back to sort it out. Theres loads of progs on it that I need and havnt got on the new comp . If it gets a format does that mean I lose those those progs ?

The time setting! You should find it on one of the blue screens that will be available after entering the setup environment by pressing the delete key when you see a lit-up mention of the 'del' key during the black screen stage of starting up.

If you can get the time set correctly by following the crude instructions on the blue screens, leave the machine switched off for several hours. If the time and date go back to 1998 (probably the year that one of the chips was made), it could mean that the battery is finished. It is a small circular shiny thing about the size of a pound coin. You could take the machine to a PC shop and ask them to change it. Now you have new machine, you can afford to try a few cheap things first and possibly learn a lot on the way.
