Help please!!!

 

When starting up my PC (Win 2000) it tries to boot up, clicks then goes off. It then starts up again. This can happen up to 5 or 6 times before it boots up to the normal desktop.

 

Initially I thought I had a dodgy power cable which I have changed, no difference made :(

The clicking sound comes from the processor as though a switching unit inside is switching the PC off.

 

Any ideas please :confused: You could save my sanity.

Power supply could be going bad. Giving a marginal amount of power to the PC so that mostly it won't start but once in a while, it will.

 

Even if you have not added new hardware or upgraded bits, the power supply will get weaker over time.

As per the 'main man' Newt, prob duff PSU, Disconnect all the power leads to the drives and try it.

Then connect one thing at a time and see if one 'takes it down', reverse your connection order and try again to see if its 'thing x' or just the 'amount of things' that's pulling the PSU down, a lot of PC's have rather small PSU's for all the bits we hang on them!

A 200W PSU will not take 2x drives & a CD in most cases.

could it be the hard drive not spinning up and rebooting finally gets it going,or is the psu or cpu fan sticking ,the psu will shut down if it sences the fan is stuck and the cpu maybe is being shut down via the thermal sensor or the bios detects its not working
