http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only

try this page mate:

type in your key and you should be able to download the software...will be about 3.5 gig

be careful though..im not sure if this will do an in place upgrade or just wipe your windows software and programs and install 8.1.

when you goto install it just check what it offers you to do...if it says "keep all your files and software" you should be ok.

if it just says "keep all your files" then be aware you will have to reinstall ALL your software again

the version from the STORE app will usually do a full upgrade; keeping everything and just upgrading windows....but ive had a couple of ISO files that wont do that.

As suggested I've asked Dell what "Windows 7 Professional (64Bit Windows 8 License, Media)" means and have been told it's a free key to upgrade to Windows 8 Professional.

Having had a play with Peggy's machine I'm happy to opt for Windows 8. Never having used 7 may have been an advantage as 8 doesn't seem too difficult.

I'm almost certainly going to go for the spec that Kiri recommended. This has Windows 8 preloaded, has a standard hard drive and an i5 processor.

However I'm thinking of doing without the Pro Support and saving £29.40 + VAT. I'll still get the free standard Dell next business day on-site service. We've used the latter in the past and it's worked well.

This brings the cost down including delivery to £510 + VAT.

Here's the spec and the customisation options: http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukbsdt1&fb=1&l=en&model_id=latitude-3540-laptop&oc=ca003l35408wer&s=bsd&vw=classic

Any final comments from anyone before I order?

Shame they don't give SSD as an option...but hey ho.

Dell support doesn't seem too bad usually.

Should be a tidy laptop all round. Just uninstall all the shite they put on in the factory and it will be fine! Lol

A full SSD drive with Dell is very expensive. I may add a 3rd party one after a year when the guarantee expires. I was certainly impressed with the speed of the one Peggy had. Although it failed fairly soon, Peggy tells me it was a reconditioned unit.

Dell's service has been good for us in the past.

Their Latitude business machines are supposedly built to a higher standard than their Inspiron consumer range.

Plus the Dell business machines have very little bloatware. However I will get rid of the McAfee AV. I gather that this can be a little difficult to do?

Found this one with a Google search

Method 1:

If you connected a second drive or any external drive to your PC (a SSD or HDD) the upgrade will fail if the second (original) drive is not disconnected. Just remove the secondary drive and all external drive, reboot and try installing the Windows 8.1 update.

Method 2:

If you do not have any external drive connected to your PC, boot the computer in a clean boot state and then try to install and check. Booting the computer in a clean boot state uses a minimal set of drivers and start-up programs. A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.
