Personally, I would define it as the entirety of the mind, and the mind as the emergent properties of the brain, but I got the impression that you would not?

No I'd go along with that, but there may be a lot of our "self" that we do not control, even if we think we do.

I don't have a dog in this fight, I just find the area of research fascinating.

I dont have a dog either ,much prefer cats but we dont have those either ,err i think ,perhaps my unconscious mind has one perhaps the cats unconcious mind has a human

Most of "us" is not controlled

I presume the making decisions part of the brain ignores or responds to "suggestions" of the old brain ,some things thrive and reproduce without a brain at all ,guess their useless at golf though

The earth currently has an obliquity of about 23.4^o.

But thats pretty provable ,how many people have to have the same opinion to make something a fact thats not provable?

If something is not a confirmed observation, it's not a fact. If its not provable then it's not a fact. Give me an example of a fact that cannot be verified to be true.
