Food for an old English banquet?

Dave H

Recommended Posts

A group of us have decided to organise an old fashioned English banquet next summer. A couple of us can supply the king’s deer which is plentiful in the south at present and mutton. Pheasant too are easy to find and duck. All this would cost nothing as we supply ourselves over time and freeze until the event. So if any of you need to get rid of these pests let me no...Thanks

Now the tricky bit what fruits or grains or recipes not using meat would have been eaten ? I don’t think much but there must have been something or things

I will be Henry V111 as i am a fat git and will have plenty of the others wives to choose from... :)

I made a start last night but plenty more needed

Alot of meat was ground, sugar, salt, spices and herbs were added in different quantities.

Also pottage was often eaten: a mix of fruit such as plums, grains and meat again sweetened and spiced.

Enjoy !!

Smile they said life could get worse, I did and it was

As old Henry means that your menu will be pre Columbian exchange, your options are going to be a bit limited.

Lots of obscure herbs and spices would have been in use back then - we hadly use sumac anymore.

Beans, peas, and greens would make sense - probably cooked with some sort of meat (ham for instance) added for flavour.

Depending on the time period you want, potatoes would be usual for the late 1700s as would foods & spices brought in from the various colonies.

Peas and lentils would be fine but beans are from the new world.
