small baitrunner?

Does it have to be a baitrunner ? The shimano reels with fighting drags work fine as baitrunners.

There's no shortage of baitrunners, but the amount of money your looking to spend will determine which ones you can look at.

I think the entry point for the fighting drag Shimano reels is the Exage, which go for about £55 new: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-Exage-3000-MHSRC-Double-Handle-/131041023420#ht_1212wt_820

Then the Super GTM which are about £80: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-Super-2500-GTM-RC-/300802268432?pt=UK_SportsLeisure_Fishing_Reels_JN&hash=item4609365d10#ht_411wt_839

Then the Stradic GTM at about £110: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Shimano-Stradic-GTM-RC-Coarse-Carp-Fishing-Reel-3000S-STR3330SGTMRC-/400562403092?pt=UK_SportingGoods_FishingAcces_RL&hash=item5d43613714#ht_1005wt_1077

Then the Biomaster RA at aboput £135: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-2011-SHIMANO-BIOMASTER-2500RA-REAR-DRAG-REEL-/150617930899?pt=UK_SportsLeisure_Fishing_Reels_JN&hash=item2311873c93#ht_1759wt_820

And finally the new Twin Power CI4 RA at about £180: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-Twin-Power-CI4-RA-Fishing-Reels-NEW-RRP-249-99-/360830443623?pt=UK_SportsLeisure_Fishing_Reels_JN&var=&hash=item54032ba067#ht_912wt_1077

There is also a Shimano 4000 FA Baitrunner, which looks to be their smallest proper baitrunner currently: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-Baitrunner-ST-4000FA-/330749300263?pt=UK_SportingGoods_FishingAcces_RL&hash=item4d0231ce27#ht_1302wt_839

...but all the newer cheap Shimano Baitrunners I've seen in the flesh feel pretty cheap...

And plenty of randoms in this list that may appeal: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=shimano+4010+reel&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.X4000+baitrunner&_nkw=4000+baitrunner&_sacat=0

For a well-made small reel that can be used for a lot of different lighter specialist methods, I still prefer the 2500 size Shimanos with the fighting drag. 90% of the time I use them as normal reels, but it's there when it's needed. Plus the smaller reels balance lighter rods better...

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

I was after a small reel recently to balance with a light feeder rod for river fishing and decided that it was worth having the bait runner function to make the reel more versatile. I opted for a Shimano baby baitrunner ST FA. It balances light set ups well, the build is no where in the league of earlier shimano baitrunners but all in all its a nice functional little reel.

Only had it for about six months, so can't comment about how reliable it will be long term and I am sure it will pack up long before my older Shimanos but its a dream to use and I love the front drag for playing big fish on light gear

Dales, I had two of those 2500 baitrunners in the double handled version several years back. I am a fan of shimano reels and have the GTE 5000, 8000's and the earlier 50110's which I realy do like but I sold the small front drag reels on after a couple of outings. I know they'll do their job well enough (which is probably all you really need) but they just felt tinny and weak to me. I wasn't keen on the front drag either to be honest but I just prefer rear drags anyhow.

Thing is all that is jmo and I know other people will love 'em.

These look like good value in the 1000's and 2500's..

Rich Rusty and myself have Mitchell avonrunner baitrunners and they are great for the money ,mine is the superior one with more BBs .

The Yoshikawa reel on Andrews link is worth thought I have a baby one on my dropshot rod that has dealt with angry double figure pike .

As mentioned some of the modern Shimmys seem to be made to a price now so guess it`s old ones off the bay or take a stab at something else mentioned in the thread

We are not putting it back it is a lump now put that curry down and go and get the scales

have I told you abouit the cruise control on my Volvo ,,,,,,,bla bla bla Barder rod has it come yet?? and don`t even start me on Chris Lythe :bleh::icecream:

Tigger, they do seem to be a bit if a marmite reel and you are not the first person who has said they shifted them on sharpish. Actually I bought mine second hand from ebay as used only a few times. I agree they dont feel like the better made older Shimanos but I love the size and weight of them and I am still very keen on front drag reels. As a teenager I could not afford bait runners but could afford cheap front drag reels which I used for Carp fishing with the drag turned right down. I just have never lost that desire to use the front drag.

For the general price point they tick all the right box's for me but I do have that question mark around how long they will last.
