We know carp will eat pretty much anything, but are they good for them?

Large acorn crop this year in the New Forest, at least 90 ponies have died this winter from eating them (about double the usual number) - the pannage season (letting pigs out to eat the acorns) has been extended because of the quantities of acorns.

I have a lake with carp in it. It has several oak trees overhanging the lake that drop acorns into it and I have seen carp eating them.

They are not prepared in any way. Why should a natural food need to be prepared anyway?

Carp will eat acorns and I have come across anglers using the presence of acorn trees as a positive sign to fish nuts and particles. No big surprise they will eat acorns as Carp will eat almost anything. From a practical point of view knowing they eat them is of little benefit as there are a whole host of easier to use and easier to procure food items that would make better baits. The only benefit of using acorns I can think of is they are free to collect but I would rather leave them on the ground for other wildlife to eat.

If you really wanted to use them then I would agree with Phone and prepare them before using them but surely using peanuts, brazils etc would be a lot less fuss then using an acorn.

Stephen
