Lots of people who were not generals though, Edward 1, William Wallace, King Fahd, COLONEL Custer,

 

Where are Hannibal, Patton, Napoleon and Stonewall Jackson? and that bloke who was Genghis Khan's general? Subito or something?

Ian, actually he was brevetted a brigadier general at age 23 during the American Civil War - but since brevet rank was temporary, you're right, he was a colonel.

Custer was a Major General who dropped a rank to Lt Colonel after the civil war in order to continue in active service

I'm pretty sure the Mongol genreral was called Subotai.

 

Wikipedia seems to prefer Subutai
