On the news today it has been exposed that the chance of rabies coming to the uk has increased due to the massive increase of dogs being smuggled into the britain the relaxing of the quarantine regulations 2 years ago looks to have increased the risk .

Under the new rules, it means animals coming from France are treated the same as dogs coming from parts of Eastern Europe where rabies is endemic.

And this is why harmonisation of rules is not always the Good Thing that enthusiasts of the European project think it is - because not all of Europe is the same. For one thing, some of it is rabid!

Rabies has always had people throthing at the mouth in fear. I am more scared of the Romanians personally

Different lyssavirus than the one that causes rabies in cats and dogs.

Just for a bit of perspective, the last rabies incident in France was in October 2013. Five people were given prophylactic treatment after comming into contact with an infected feral kitten that they decided to try to adopt.

The last such incident prior to this was in 1998.

I suspect that the level of vigilence is low in responce to the low level of the threat.

Yep. If you are bitten by a stray in this country, you don't need rabies prophylaxis. If you are bitten by a bat, you should probably consider it.
