Sam, you certainly can use scaled-down pike or bass tactics. However, do also experiment with worms. In my experience they often outfish live and deadbaits on clear gravel pits. They'd also be my first choice for river fishing, partly because of the problem of unwanted pike. Most of all though, you need to be flexible and experiment.

I haven't done articles on perch fishing on gravel pits or rivers specifically for Angler's Net purely as I'm doing another perch book. However, you'll find several of my perch articles at http://anglers-net.co.uk/authors/introsteve.htm

You'll also find lots more articles in the relevant section on Angler's Net, and as argyll has said a search will throw up a lot of useful material.

However, if you've any specific questions I'm sure that we can come up with some ideas for you to try.

Thanks for the offer, Andy, but this one's a very personal book. Although it'll be part-instructional it's very much telling the story of my perch fishing, hence the title "Perch & the Perchfisher".

Sam

Give small spoons or Mepps spinners a try. Aglia or Comet, although I tie all mine with a red tag (wool, bucktail or some of the new synthetic fly tying materials). I prefer Mepps.

In my opinion they are lethal having caught perch this year up to 2.5 lbs on them.

Cheers

David

Nice fish Ricey, My biggest to date is a 2.75lb'er.

I have seen a fish of around 3.5lb and have heard of much bigger still from reliable sources. I have a couple of swims where I can pretty much guarentee at least a couple of 2lb'ers a trip but sorting out the bigger specimens is hard graft. I really need to try some new swims but with fishing time at a premium I always end up in the 'reliable' ones.

Do you target any other species? The Chelmer has come on leaps and bounds in the past few years, it has some huge carp, pretty respectable tench and bream and some very impressive chub. Best of all its very underfished.

Whats the best pike you've heard of? I've always struggled to get anything over about 12.5lbs myself.

i've had a bash at pretty much all of the species.

most of my time is spent looking for that elusive BIG chub though.

i've had one carp out at just ubder 9lb. it put up one hell of a fight! like you say though, there some much biggers ones in there.

I havnt spent as much time targeting the Pike as I would like, i hooked into one that was about 15lb, but i panicked and brought it in a bit too green. lost it right at the net... gutted! I've seen one or two more about that weight.

PM me if you wanna talk about swims etc. :D
