Invasive Species

Rice Crackers

Recommended Posts

I haven't been on this forum long having just got back into fishing but one thing that's obvious is how invasive species in British waters has become a real issue in recent years.

Seems it's even worse in Chicago, where they're seriously considering blocking the ship canal system (at tremendous economic cost) to prevent the spread of Asian Carp into the great lakes.

Rice,

This has been DONE TO DEATH.

I think the overwhelming conclusion is that the only non native fish that is favorable in British waters is - - - - - - - - - - -

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

All,

Crawdads make up a majority of carp and otter diets in the US. They well be the reason for the "differences" in fishing here vs the UK. We have lots more lure fishing and very limited bait fishing. For carp it is unusual to leave a bait more than half an hour unless it is a Euro style boilie.

though not a fish , the american signal crayfish has to be the biggest threat to native fish .

does anyone know how far north they have travelled in the uk

I am not sure how they threaten native fish ,they cant catch them as they can only go fast backwards ,they can certainly threaten habitat if they burrow into dams or bunds.

Going by the amount of fry i see in a pond full of crays they have little effect eating spawn ,i guess like mink the real impact is negligible but great for taking the blame for poor anglers or poor waters

Are carp really imports ,we know they have been here for over 1000 years ,perhaps they were here pre the last ice age when we were joined to europe but died out then were reintroduced
