Yes have fun stripping and drying your braided line after every trip ,or do you mean your pretending to fish the old way ,no barbless hooks ,knotted landing nets and 6 foot keepnets ,gaffs and horsehair ,have fun

6 foot keepnets chesters? That was a big one back then, more like 3 or 4 foot, soaked in linseed oil along with the landing net, at least every closed season, more often if needed.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

What, like Chris Yates, for instance, does?

Why berate a person for wanting to go back to basics? Go for it adsangling, I for one wish you every success in your venture. Be sure to keep us up to date and post the odd photo or two as well.

Not berating as such but wondering ,yates doesnt go the whole way himself knots are illegal as you know

Is it basics ? I certainly couldnt afford any decent vintage tackle of medium to top quality today (you can buy cars cheaper than good avons) perhaps the tackle i used? a tin reel with permenant clicker and a solid cane rod .

Dont think "basics" equals old ,dont think basics means less fish

The crabtree silliness has all been done before ,its quaint but for the majority of anglers far disconected from real life today

If cane and round reels were really that good we would all be using them today ,the best thing i ever did was take a two pound hammer to mine ,the rod lives in the loft it will never see a bank again

Yes theres a minority that like old tackle just as there is that like old cars or buses but most use modern gear and drive modern cars and travel on modern buses because they are more comfy more reliable and a dam sight easier to look after (i find older cars are easier say 20 to 30 ,like the reels i suppose)

Photos mr rabbit ,black and white or surely sketches?

Done all that, fished with rods made of native wood, made my own wooden reels, used horsehair casts, even forged my own hooks.

Why ?

Just to prove to myself I could do it, and catch fish with the end result.

...and no photos required, just a scratched sketch on a cave wall is fine .

Are you going to dress the part for a headline photograph?

Getting old tackle could be a real problem.

Here is a link to an article I wrote sometime ago which may give you some ideas the part you want is under Angling-Tales. It is copyright, although hopefully it could give some pointers.

Theres no problem getting old tackle the auction sites are stuffed with it ,it all depends on exactly when (as in decade) you are going to pretend to be angling in. Edited by chesters1

You could do a photograph comparison showing both the old and the current or newer versions of the old equipment especially where some i.e. old style keepnets are illegal these days.

no modern methods will be used, im going back to cane rods, wicker baskets etc simply to prove that youngster and people joining the sport don't need to be fooled by everything that companies try to sell them these days and how fish can still be caught the old way just as effectively :)

Nothing wrong with keeping things simple and basic but not so sure about the vintage angle with cane and wicker etc. Surely Mr Crabtree was not using "vintage tackle" but just standard kit for the times he lived in.

Would teaching youngsters to use cane rods etc not be conditioning them to be fooled by rod and reel makers to place orders for hundreds of pounds and then have to wait a few years for the order to be filled?

Getting youngsters in to fishing is very worthy but maybe using affordable and attainable tackle to do it may be a better idea.

Stephen

Was at a collector's fair today, lots of old 'Crabtree' era stuff there but it was not selling. Spoke to one stall holder who confirmed that interest in the old stuff had dropped. His opinion, & I think that he is right, that all us aged, decrepit Crabtree fans tend to be well into our sixties now, and not many of us are now visiting the banks let alone reliving our long past angling adventures.
