They could have them for fly fishing surely. But have one competition for weight and one for number of fish caught, lets face it, the only people who could complain about this way of approaching it would be the people competing and if they didn't like it, they could bloody well **** off :D Coarse fishing would be a different matter altogether, that is based more on luck at times than anything else, for instance i can remember paying to fish at some places, hardly any tackle and having to share a landing net with my mate on the next peg but still hammering the swim, whereas some poor soul across the way looked to be catching sweet f.a, now i know i was crap and he had lots of gear, i doubt he was "all the gear no idea", it was pure luck that i was in the right place at the right time

I don't think it should be included in the Olympics at all

TBH I don't think fishing should be competitive (unless your trying to inprove personal achievements etc)...when it becomes 'serious' it's missing the point.

why not match fishing? if sailing and shooting is in then why not? i mean who on earth is waching the sailing?

And what qualifies as a sport anyway? is gymnastics or ice dancing or dressage a sport? if they are then so is match fishing.

We have world championships in match fishing so why not in the olympics? And at least we could win some medals. We could have different events as well like fishing with a 4 meter whip, fishing with an 11 meter pole, mens and womens events it could be really good. I know match fishing is only one branch of angling but still it could be good to give the sport a bit of a higher profile. i would not dismiss the idea.

The competitors (if included) would surely have to be proficient at all types of fishing? Match, specimen, sea (beach) sea (boat), Fly and even carp and tiddler bashing.

Given 6 hours at each would soon sort out the best (on the day)

They could just do what that fishing programme on Discovery did, where 2 people would get points for the fish and live off them for like a week, and the one who survives wins xD

I can see a case for various "tournament casting" events, where skill can be reasonably accurately measured and rewarded.

As for angling itself, conditions in the host country would be too parochial and favour the home side too much.

It would not interest me one bit. I grew out of "match fishing" in my late teens (having won a few sea and freshwater comps).

Only twice have I fished competitively since then - the first time I fished a Troutmaster area heat on a small water and won, so found myself fishing the second in the Troutmaster final at Grafham. There I witnessed competitive fly fishing at its best and worst, and had no wish to extend my experience. Luck is a great leveller, and my boat partner on the day was much more proficient in casting, changing flies, changing lines, adjusting the drift etc than I was, yet we both hooked two fish each and no more. I learnt a lot from him, but the behaviour of many others put me off - angling etiquette right out of the window - cutting across drifts, and if you were playing a fish, other boats acting like wasps raiding a picnic.

Presumably at International level there are rules re that sort of behaviour - what say you Greg Long?
