I remember talking to some old boy who said they used to throw bass back as there was no market for them

I was told the same,

I'm somewhere between the overfishing and climate argument for what it's worth.

Same as me then, 20% over fishing and 80% climate.

No no no. 90% overfishing for sure. Anything else is fairyland.

:D That is correct.

I thought that.. so it is the weathers fault after all.. too much good weather let the commercial boats out too much and caused them to catch too many Herring.. yup.. tis the weather again :)

Hi Davy, Im sure the herring collapse of the late sixties/early seventies was very much down to overfishing, but I've never seen any evidence that the earlier collapses were. There are accounts of "collapses" going back centuries; way before we realistically had the power to effect the populations of low level pelagic species like herring surely? Whether there are enough apex predators left to follow the herring around the top of Scotland now is another subject altogether? :(

I dont know a great deal about my towns fishing history (Scarborough) but I have seen pictures of tunny fishing in the museum. Might even go down today and take another look round. Ill be honest I am fairly ignorant about fishing matters and didnt realise that tunny were tuna :P
