The good old days ? ? ?

This is bass fishing at its best! Reading Bob Cox's 1984 book 'Boatcasting and Uptiding. This pic on page 3, "Part of a 99 fish catch taken from the Kentish Knock, biggest 13.5lbs". Bob says only the fish in the picture were kept the rest were returned.

All this in 2.75hrs fishing time. It was a long stream for the two Bradwell based boats, probably at least as long each way as actual fishing time. Date, I would guess circa mid seventies, reading the text?

 Some of the catch figures in this chapter would make a grown man weep, 1000lb of cod, 66 skate. In one, two hour session in June 1976, 180 bass were caught. Conservation these days changes the thinking, but could the potential, even half the potential be realised these days?

I can recall back in the 80s caught as much as 60lb of cod in 4hrs fishing on the rocks had to packup could/nt carry any more up the cliff but as one lad who fishes in our club said at least we have seen it but a lot of you younger guys have/nt,started to fish the rocks in the mid 70ssi was in my teens and caught my best shore caught cod which tipped the 20lb mark i remember i got a little exiceted when i caught it,had one 17lb yesterday in the boat yesterday but the buzz is not the same as catching them from the shore.

big_cod, 'Silver serfer' has a different meaning for us anglers?

My regret is that I was young in those days, had the energy and a fast boat, but ignored bass, they just were not 'cool'. Life is slower now, more time to think, more experiance? Remember the big fish, will those days return?

Remenisance is fine but those days have been and gone (hopefully they will return, but in this highly commercialised age where eating sea caught bass and cod is trendy dont count on it). For me angling is just as exciting now because there is less fish. To be able to catch them you have to make a lot more effort, learn a lot more about your chosen fish(extensive note keeping helps), learn where they now hang out and why, you have to learn about various baits and how to keep them in tip top condition, Things are no longer as simple as they once were but just as rewarding if not more when you do locate a fish or 2.

BC am I right in thinking you caught a cod near 16pound from the shore less than 3 years ago?I remember your face when you caught it. The fish wouldnt take the worm that year and then all of a sudden they did

Daylight scares me too. I think it stems from fishing too much in the dark. Recently I started fishing the odd saturday afternoon and started to do well, plus you see more in the light, you can see where other people fish so learn the marks, you can see what rigs and bait others use. You can also notice subtle little differences in the conditions. Confidence is key I guess.

Unfortunately I never had the privilege of fishing my local mark in its prime-The Clyde.

Ive heard stories from my dad about how the guy next to him on the boat caught a 30lb Cod on a handline-a few hundred yards off Millport. He used to go out for four hours at a time and come back with binbags full of Cod and Haddock. TBH Id be very surprised if fishing ever returned to the level it used to be at, but we can always hope. Actually, Loch Fyne was fishing amazingly well for just about anything a couple of years back, my dad had a couple of triple shots of Haddock on one trip, although I think that the return of the Haddock was down to a combination of the feed coming from the many Salmon cages in the Loch and the lack of commercial activity.
