Piking Opportunity

I've not time to read all of the posts at present so I may just duplicate someone elses advice? I prefer wobbling deads to lure fishing but green (seldom fished for) Pike are generally easy to catch? I'd wait for the weather to improve or at worse be stable for some time before I tackled somewhere that I wasnt intending to fish much. New moon, low pressure 8 - 10 degrees and a stiff breeze would see me very very optimistic! You have my envy!

You have my envy!

And you have my gratitude, Dave.

Cheers. ;)

Might I respectfully ask Tel; Was the pike fishing opportunity thingy some sort of community service order passed out as a sentence by local magistrates?

Regards,

Lee

Dear Lee,

You cheeky git.

Bless.

Tel. :P

For the record, mush, I gained permission for this utterly splendid lake due to an act of ferocious kindness. I helped a friend in time of need who then repaid me ten-fold.

I shall say no more, other than no magistrates or representitves thereof, were involved at any stage. Please don't judge my good self by your own shoddy standards, Sir!

And have a harrumph! for your trouble.

:D

And on the eighth day God created carp fishing...and he saw that it was pukka.

Ah this sounds like a bit of the old rolled up trouser leg and dodgy handshake business.

Don't you bleddy start! <_<

I helped a chap and his young lad. I was rewarded with an unbelievable fishing opportunity. Nothing dodgy. End of. ;)

It seems that the hand of friendship is no longer accepted as universal currency.

Terry, my first trip or two would definitely be lure only. I find this a fast way to explore new waters and find depths, weedbeds and snags etc. Also if I do get snagged I won't be leaving baits with hooks anywhere. Hopefully it'll also throw up a few fish, or at least some follows.

I'd choose a high pressure day, preferably one when the barometer is rising after a longish spell of low pressure. I'd take a variety of lures, but I'd start with a spoon as this can cover a wide range of depths and can be used at different speeds. I'd start with a rather faster retrieve than usual, partly to cover a lot of water, and partly to cream off any active fish.

Having found an area containing some fish I'd make the next session a deadbait one. I'd take a variety of baits, certainly including mackeral, smelt and lamprey. With 2 rods I'd ledger with one, but rarely leave it static, and may even convert it to wobbling. The second would also be recast and moved fairly regularly but less so. I'd start with a sunken float paternoster on this one, with the float on the paternoster link. This would enable me to increase/decrease the depth by tightening/slacking off. Sometimes the depth can be critical, but in any event the movement often triggers a take.

Whatever you do, the best of luck!
