Yep, just make sure you take note how the thin wires fit onto the motherboard. They can be a bugger to get right if you don't, even if you use the instruction pamphlet....

There's only one plug to go on the MB so shouldn't have a problem.

The others go to drives so hopefully I can't go wrong. ;)

Any idea how much I looking at for a replacement?

For a decent one, look aroud £40-£50+ but you can pick up cheapo (no name/brand ones) for £15-£25, but they`re usually not worth the cash and can blow up within a few months

From the smell it's more that a fuse.

I'm an sparky by trade(retired) and know the smell.

I'ts gonna be fried.

It's about two years old so may have been a chaepo one in the first place, it feels a bit 'light' quality if you know what I mean.

I'll see what's in the shops tomorra.

Thanks for the replies folks. :D

A very easy job to do and it is impossible to mix the leads up that plug into the motherboard as they only fit the right sockets. Just take a note what leads go where you might have a spare one from the power supply depending on your processor. Also, go for a high output power supply a min of 400w especially if you have a lot of cards plugged into your motherboard. (a lower one might have been why yours blew up). As for cost even good ones with 2 quiet fans are cheap less than £20. Try www.refreshcomputers.com. Also a good time to have a spring clean inside your pc.

most of the reasons for psu's dying is the fan either clogs up or seizes ,and being built the way they are a fatal cascade of the components happens , with psu's unlike everything else the heavier it is generally the better it is as it has larger componants and heatsinks.

clean your fans every month ,it may be the fuse 50% of the time it is but usually they are soldered direct to the board (none of those "expensive" holders nowadays) and are fiddly to replace

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you
