Theres third party spool cases ,i remember one free with an angling mag once ,and ofcourse abu sold them for their 500 series ,you could buy mitchell ones as well first in metal then plastic

The spool was label side up when I loaded it and its 20lb sea mono for mackeral feathering whilst on holiday in Cornwall in a few months time.

I never did see a spare spool case though - something that might actually be useful for keeping line on the spool, away from light and away from hooks etc that are prone to tangling with spare spools.

The early Mitchell 300s came with the spare spool in a fitted case. I wish they still did.

My Mitchell 300s's come with a little hole in the front lip of the spool. Just poke the line through with about a 2" tail and pull tight. I also use an elastic band for extra security. Spare spools stay in the reel case, where I get 1 reel and 2 spare spools.

Yes, you're right, they did. They also had an instant spool realease button that allowed you to remove the spool without changing the drag setting or the risk of dripping the spool cap screw.

Neither innovation seems to gave caught on.

You mention that your intending to use this line for mackeral fishing? What weight of lead are you planning to use? I ask this as its the accepted practice of all sea anglers to use a breaking strain of 10lb for every ounce that is to be cast. So if your using 20lb BS that equates to 2oz of lead.

 

It would be far better to use say 15lbBS line with a 50/60lbBS leader.

Yes, but that's for power casting with a stiff beachcaster. An overhead thump with an old carp/pike rod

is going to be fine.

How many carpies use 40lb or a shock leader with their 4oz leads?
