New Digital Camera Help

Paul_D

Recommended Posts

My wife wants to buy me a new digital camera for Christmas (she just happens to like taking pics herself... :D ). Following the comments on recent threads I suggested to her the Fuji Finepix 5600 but she is leaning towards the Sony Cyber-shot H1.

Now, knowing zilch about whats good or not in the world of digital cameras do any of you have any thought on which would make the better buy? It's supposed to be my choice but she's definitely 'driving' the project.....

Cheers

Paul

I recently bought a Fuji Finepix S3500 and absolutely love it.

I can only comment on what I've used, but would definitely buy another Fuji off the back of this one's performance.

The FUJI FINEPIX S3100 is available from:

http://www.photooptix.co.uk for £129.99 seems like a bargain

Is that better than the S3500? I haven't seen that one. I got the S3500 from Makro - £99+ VAT

Here's a few sites that do detailed reviews of digital cameras:

http://www.steves-digicams.com

http://www.dpreview.com

http://www.tomshardware.com

http://www.dcresource.com

http://www.megapixel.net

Some other useful links for price comparisons:

http://www.dealtime.co.uk

http://www.kelkoo.co.uk

My choice of the two you mentioned would be the Sony. The precessor of the Fuji 5600 (called the 5500 over here and the 5100 in the States) got poor reviews for its flash and its low light focussing, both important for fishing photos. To be fair that may be sorted now, but there are no reviews I can find yet for the new 5600.

Best of all I'd recommend the Canon S2 IS that I've got myself. 5 megapixels, 12x zoom, image stabilisation to counteract camera shake (especially good in low light or at extreme telephoto), plus AF assist to allow it to focus in the dark.

It also has a flip round screen that, amongst other things, makes self-portraits a doddle, especially as the self-timer can be programmed for a delay of from 2 to 30 seconds and then allows you up to take up to 10 shots without returning to the camera! This means that you don't need a remote or an air release. Picture quality is superb as can be seen by my shot of this peregrine falcon:

If you're after a more compact camera, the new Canon PowerShot A620 & A610 both offer the flip round screen, AF assist for focussing at night and the advanced self-timer as on the S2.

Thanks for the input guys..

Steve, it's particularly the optical zoom we're looking for with a minimum of 10x. Will look into the Canon S2. Thanks.

I have the earlier EOS 300D with the same focal length lenses and i am well pleased with the results so far, but I am having a few problems with the Sigma 50-500 DC lens as it does not interface with the flash function, not that I use it much.

I am also considering the Sigma 135-400mm APO lens for my Birdwatching stuff, Ive heard the lens is compatible.
