Ah that's what they were. We had loads of them in the garden yesterday as we were doing a bbq. For some reason they took a fancy to me and kept landing on my head or on my shorts. We also had a pair of moths mating on the wall - I'll post up a pic and see if I can identify them.

And here's the moths, I think they're a variety of Hawk moth.

The male must have been about an inch, inch and a half, the female about an inch head to tail. In the picture you can just the bottom of the brick so head to tail - tail to head spans the width of one house brick. I'm guessing the wingspan would have been about 2 1/2 inches for the male. Shame the light was pretty much direct and of course they're pretty well camouflaged.

 

A bit more searching reveals it's a poplar hawk moth
