First of all, do you have manual control on your camera Judy and then can you change the shutterspeed and aperture. In all probability you have a lightmeter already inbuilt and it should be visible when in manual mode both on the LCD and through the viewfinder. It prob wont be visible when your using the camera in "auto" mode, have a look thorugh your cams manual to see what it has to say about manual mode.

I doubt that the Africans have experienced snow like this on safari!

Steve would a light meter help me get to grips with using the manual settings?

This may be of interest to you Judy.

My brother & I recently compared a hand held meter with the inbuilt meter in my D70 by taking a set of photo's using each method to determine exposure. To be quite honest we felt the inbuilt meter edged it.

So working on that basis I'd trust your cameras meter. Very interested to hear if Steve has anything to say about this, because I really thought the handheld meter would have been better.

I dont know for sure but I would hazard a guess that its better because the lightmeter is configured for optimum performance with the camera, if that makes sense.

Thanks Steve. I've been perusing photos in this thread and others, and am very impressed with many of the images shared by AN members. Who knows, I may even enter a photo competition soon. Here's one other shot of myself and my wife Karin at Bryce:

Sev, If I ever win a million, then the wife and I will spend a year (or more) sightseeing in the States.
