£2000 Kayak

At the risk of being slated by the rest of you...... :o !!

If any one does still have a boat, I'd be more than happy to crew for them (and pay towards the bait /fuel)

I get the feeling it's going to be a bit nippy in the water this winter, and I've just got the wife to buy me a new rod for Xmas!!

I have to re-engine BULLET this year (it is 1969 after all, so hasn't done badly). I added up the cost of the spares needed to rebuild the old engine - it is 80% the price of a new installation! Then I would still have an old engine!

SO, in January I am taking her down to Rock, Cornwall where the original builder is still living and he and I are going to rip out the old one, do some work on the interior and put the new one back in. The old girl will get a new lease of life and hopefully rekindle my enthusiasm for boats again - but not over the kayak.

It's a funny thing. I like racing powerboats. I like BULLET and the ability to cover enormous distances very quickly, and the rush of wind and all that - and the grace and style of turning up at a waterside hostelry in an old, wooden speedboat. BUT the kayak does my heart good, it does my head good and fulfills my spirit in a way that the boat doesn't. I'll happily take someone out in the boat for a change - on a trailer so can go anywhere. The shock comes when you have to put £70 petrol in each day! The 4o knots makes up for it though!

The kayak keeps me sane. The boat feeds my need for speed!

I added up my costs the other day.... and it was just over 2 grand as well. I spent less on clothing as I already had most of that....but I more than made up for it with what I spent on RAM mounts :)

So for everybody thats looking to get into the sport, yes we'll all tell you you can get the basic kit and get out there fishing for £600, but don't be fooled, you will end up closer to £2000 :)

But is it worth it ?

Oh yes :D

Hi Simon, I know what you mean re speed on the water, its just great. But like you my 20footer just eats fuel, around 60 to 70 pounds to refill the tank, but has its in france there are no slipway fees to pay, but the insurrance makes up for that. The kayak makes you feel more at home on the water, but the boat is just great :):) . terry

If only I had all the money for all the toys I want,;-(

Got most of them now, Just working on that Harley in blue ;-)

Jusy worked out that I am on the water for about £885. About £200 of that was birthday early christmas presssies.

Not bad considering it includes one new rod and reel, dry top & bottoms etc. ONly must haves needed are Flares (35). Few "would likes" still outstanding, fishfinder @£150 inc bits and pieces, another rod and reel £100. :o;):)

Fished since 2003, the rest of my life I just wasted.

Darnsarf - you don't need a fishfinder! You will soon learn to fish without one - you just tag along with someone else who has one rigged. Why else do you think we invite StarvinMarvin along?

Ye hes a top bloke. He even lets you dunk them! :D

Call it a product test. Yes the Hummingbirds really are waterproof.:)

Only reason I really want one is so I can set the float rigs a couple of feet off the bottom. More for depth finding and see bottom profile really.

But agree not essential. :)

Sorry got to disagree, the Finder is totally necessary, it's the first thing that people notice on the beach and it alway, always makes them stop for a chat... therefore essential for public relations. :P

Simon, thought that the only reason I was invited was so that you had somewhere warm and dry to cook your enormous breakfasts :D
