Killing Ivy

Love it - No.

It's part of the overgrown mess of Leylandii, buddleia and ivy that I inherited when I bought the house.

I could tollerate it is it wasn't so invasive but the fence and the entire slope at the back of the house are dominated by the stuff to the point where i can't plant anything else. I have to go out and cut it back at least twice a year. If the suplier of Sodium Chlorate turns out to be legit, I'm seriously considering killing everything on the slope over the summer and replanting it with something managable like low growing conifers.

Don't know about those but it certainly attracts lots of bees and wasps in the autumn - which is a bit of a worry because I'm alergic to wasp venom.

Then there are the spiders. I get lots of exotic spiders in the house and even had to turf a tube web spider out of the lounge last summer.

We had a problem with Ivy and cleared it with glyphosate. Not the diluted stuff you can purchase in 5 litre containers though, go to a farm chemical supplier and you can buy many different brands of undiluted glyphosate we used Clinic Ace. It costs £28 for 5 litres. Get an extension on your sprayer to get a longer reach, if you can get at the main stems cut them just above ground level and paint the cut with the neat stuff. As long as the sap is rising you'll kill of any plant and most tree's too. An alternative is buy some goats, they love ivy.

Will bare in mind the industrial strength glyphosphate if the Sodium Clorate fails.

Goats are alas not an option unless they are niinja goats able to operate unseen on the neighbouring property, and able to fly - the furthest part of the fence from the house is 25 feet above ground level.

The wasps you see buzzing round ivy flowers in October-November are almost all drones that have been made redundant.

The queens are busy looking for winter quarters and the workers are mostly dead by then, so neither is likely to turn up around flowering ivy..

Drones don't have stings.

It is illegal to sell ammonium sulfamate for use as a weedkiller, for reasons of EU bureaucracy. This is a shame, because it is very useful for recalcitrant weeds like ivy and horsetail and a low risk, non-persistent product.

It is still legal to buy and use it as a compost accelerator, and can easily be purchased on ebay for that purpose. Just don't go spraying your weeds with it.

Goats will not have a problem with heights the one at a farm i worked at regularly climbed his apple trees to scoff the fruit (wink)
