Return of the eel

I am never sure what to believe when it comes to eel stocks as the "information" from those in the know seems to be almost extinct or being over run with them. What ever the real story is I don't see the point in elver fishing. Surely allowing the elvers to run unfished is the best policy to ensure a healthy population which in turn should allow those who want to catch and take adult fish the opportunity to do so.

 Unfortunately elvers are worth a lot of money and we export most of ours so a few people make a lot of money at the expense of everyone else, it should be banned.

The elvers are mostly taken to be farmed to adult size. In terms of population impact, taking 10,000 elvers is going to have less of an impact on population numbers than harvesting 10,000 adult fish (because of 10,000 elvers perhaps fewer than 500 might survive to become silver eels).

Last time I checked, the Severn, Usk, Wye, Bristol Avon, Teme and Warwickshire Avon (All upstream of the collection point) were noticably devoid of dams and hydro power schemes (Although there are a couple on Severn tributaries up in Wales) and the Severn's weirs are rather gentle afairs that are hardly likely to present a problem to an animal that can negotiate vertical waterfalls.

The truth of the matter is that most of the elvers caught will be shipped to Northern Ireland to be grown on commercially in Lough Neagh.

In short, the article is BS with regard to conservation and while I'm quite sure that there have been variable numbers of returning elvers over recent years, I've not heard of anyone noticing a significant reduction in eel catches to anglers, or indeed of any study of the numbers of ells present in river systems - they were certainly still present in plague proportions when i fished the lower Severn last summer.

All,

I don't think your eel population is the least bit connected to what happens to them in England. Maybe slightly in number and size of adults at the end of an 8 year cycle.

We're not talking of taking 10,000 elvers here, we're talking of taking millions which leave very few to grow to adulthood and breed. Coupled with dams and other restrictions on the elvers making their way inland they need all the help they can get and to make a few people very rich at the cost to everyone else is stupid, immoral and greedy. :-(

That's the thing that I find annoying, the amount they remove is huge. The more elvers in the system the better chance of having a sustainable population going forward. But I guess like everything else money talks.

I just picked a number for illustration - so with around 95% mortality between elver and silver eels, taking a million elvers is the equivalent of taking 50,000 adult eels.

The point is that if you are going to take eels, to do as much damage as killing one adult eel from the wild you would have to take twenty elvers from the wild to farm. It's less damaging to take elvers than mature eels, though obviously you can take too many of either.

There are of course arguments about the sustainability of fish farming, but they don't apply directly to the eel population.

It's a different argument with stocks which spawn repeatedly, but eels grow, spawn, die.

I understand your view Steve but it is a crazy situation when some people are allowed to remove huge amounts of elvers for business/profit while your average angler is not allowed take a single one for food or bait under the the banner of protecting the species. Obviously replacing taking elvers for taking large numbers of adult eels would also make no sense but i really struggle with the concept of not allowing recreational taking of a species but allowing industrial scale removal by business interests.
