Return of the eel

Responses to the public consultation on eels can be found at:

http://test.environment-agency.gov.uk/static/documents/Business/Consultation_feedback_summary_-_coarse_fish_removal.pdf

The EU's Data Framework Directive for fisheries requires member countries to make returns on the recreational catch for a number of species including eels and to a proven standard of accuracy.

But the Environment Agency (who are responsible for eels) has no mechasnism, nor the money or resources to produce figures for the recreational catch of eels that would satisfy the EU requirements.

Therefore, it's easier to simply ban the recreational take of eels!

I don't believe "no mechanism, no money, no resources" its a feeble excuse.

So, because the EA bureaucrats are too lazy, or too incompetent to produce means of obtaining these figures, or haven't the moral courage to tell the "EU requirement" gurus to get stuffed, we suffer a blanket ban.

No wonder UKIP is gaining support !

here we go a public consultation on fresh water take ban, following on from that the trust didn't bother with the rsa although they claimed it was discussed within their sea committee, then changed that info to a letter sent.

The trust was in the driving seat re the ban. Even though they missed the closing of the consultation, they were asked for their input after the event. Ever since that day they have been contrite over that issue squirming when they felt that they needed to quell the troops.

Before the ban we were told that the take by the angling community was insignificant in any event, where are those figures?

How come those working on the ban discovered that they could have an accurate number of eels in a count to use supporting the ban, i.e. a 50 count at the top of the thames, yet can't find any information regarding the take of the angler, funny that. Along with the famous quote of 'every one counts'.

there was no therefore a ban is easier espoused at the time.

Freshwater take ban in the uk, the eu had nothing to do with it.

Anyone got any figures on the amount of eel that are going back dead with regards to the angling take ban legislation?

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

For marine species the Marine Management Organisation has attempted to do this through data collected via the Sea Angling 2012 project.

Yup that was supposed to be a snap shot, even at the time the likes of the trust told all that they would go to the meetings without providing stats and report back to their members and to those who they claim to represent. (they don't trust defra) Six meetings in total and the trust offered up nothing to anyone. .Following on from the meetings and the conclusion where defra had a back slapping (no money, even the minister went) party for those involved to launch the next stage of the management plan for the rsa without consultation btw. The trust are using those figures, without consultation to further their aims for the rsa.

They are working on the management plan adopted by Ireland re the bass without consultation. And locally in sussex working on a commercial ban for the bream but desperately offering up angling restrictions so they can carry on taking the same fish. The rsa ifca reps have worked on and continuing to on a strategy to use in the management of the rsa without consultation, worse those who ask the question why, are denied access to ask the question, aren't they mr roskilly. Even mr roskily's mate shotter's working on a rsa strategy, bonkers.

All of that management system requires a total overhaul to make it fit for purpose, get rid of the dinosaurs first and foremost as they aren't repping sea anglers that for sure.

Thanks Leon, however, some have been doing that covertly for at least 14 years.

When I first joined Anglers Net I suggested it might be done by the EA, but the professed eel lovers of that time spent a lot time saying there were no EA resources to do it, and for anyone else to do so was not on, because taking the elvers was "illegal", and stocking them was "illegal".

What would you expect a real eel lover to do ?

There is no logic against taking elvers from an estuary, and whizzing them up the system, thus avoiding a huge swathe of hazards and predators - the only possible snag was if they needed acclimatisation in the sudden change from brackish to fresh water. Even that could be avoided by taking them from near the top of the brackish stretches.

A pity the penny didn't drop in 2000 - still, better late than never
