hi everyone,

i'm in israel at the moment, right on the med. i've been here for a month, and the only tackle i brought with me is my spinning rod and a variety of plugs, spinners etc i havent had a single bite. last night when i was out on the rocks there were some guys mullet fishing using 7 metre rods that looked like poles with guides whipped on, they were catching plenty, decent sized fish too, so my question is what rod do i need to fish for them? all the guys here were saying it had to be the same as their rod, but i dont fancy that, too long, unweildy, etc plus i'd never get it on the plane when i come home! am i right in thinking that a normal longish course float rod would do? i've found a tackle shop, but advice isnt their strong point!

thanks in advance for your help

You should have some fun with the right gear - they don't hang about, according to mullet fanatics

Good luck,

Hiya, Years ago , myself and a mate used to fish for Mullet in the warm water outflow from Kincardine Power Station. We used 10ft match rods and Mitchell 300 reels. We used to floatfish bread flake, we had a fairly decent strike rate and caught a fair few fish to about 3.1/2 lbs. :D They fight like crazy, and thats where most of our fish were lost. The management dont let anyone on the property now, so , all that great fishing is lost to everyone.

In sleep every dog dreams of food, and I, a fisherman, dream of fish..

Too right they don't. Thick-lipped mullet have been clocked at 50mph! Thats just about as fast as bonefish! :P You could always try fly fishing for them. Any white or light coloured fly would be worth a try.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.
