problem with thumbnails in my documents

Recommended Posts

Last week i had 21 microsoft updates, i downloaded 19 of them as the others are not needed.

Afterwards i noticed i had lost lots of photographs. I did two system restores before i got some of them back

and then retrieved the the rest from my external hard drive.

When i looked at my documents all thumbnails of photographs have a small lock showing in the bottom left hand corner.

I thought they may have gone to read only but i can open and edit them.

Is there an easy way to get rid of the locks.

I have win 7 and IE 9

Can be caused by the lovely Norton and it various cock eyed shenanigans!

Usually norton ghost backup or similar. Basically it's folder permissions being re written or going awry

Try this bit of info to resolve:

There are two ways of removing the lock icon.

Method 1:

a. Right click on the folder and click on “Properties”.

b. Go to the tab “Sharing”.

c. Click on “Share”.

d. Select the usergroup from the dropdown e.g. Everyone if you want to share it with everyone and then click on Share to remove the lock from the folder.

The usergroup “Everyone” will have access to the folder then. The folder no longer has special permissions and Windows 7 will therefore remove the lock icon.

Method 2:

a. Right click on the folder and click on“Properties”.

b. Go to the tab “Security”.

c. Click on the “Advanced” button at the bottom.

d. Click on “Change Permission”.

e. Select your user account and check the option “Include inheritable permissions from this object’s parent”.

f. Click on apply to remove the lock icon.

The lock icon will be removed because the folder now inherits the permission of the parent folder. If that folder does not have any special permissions you will successfully remove the lock from the folder.

kiri, first one didn't work.

did the second down to e which was already ticked and in f apply wasn't highlighted.

Thanks anyway for trying.
