Niggles after rebuild

The main hard drive failed on my desktop PC yesterday, fortunately the machine has a backup drive for data so not much was lost but it did mean a dash to PC World (I know but it was my only option), a new drive and fresh install. I hate doing this as I can never remember the sequence of stuff to be loaded and all the little tweaks I’ve previously done but I got there in the end and feel pretty chuffed with myself…but I have two issues.

Firstly I know that XP is not supported now but does that mean that the ‘old’ updates are no longer available to users? I was hoping they would be and it was a case of no new updates being developed but my machine can’t connect to the XP update bit of the Microsoft web page.

Secondly I seem to have lost Windows Explorer, it should be under the accessories menu and it was when the fresh install was complete. I dragged the icon to desktop and then for some reason deleted it and now it’s gone from accessories. Any idea where it might be?

XP should update; old updates are available still, even the latest IE security flaw has been patched.

by windows explorer do you mean internet explorer?

in either case by dragging and dropping you have in fact removed the shortcut from the start menu instead of copying it.

to hunt it out again head to:

C:\program files\internet explorer

look for iexplore.exe for internet explorer

and

c:\windows

and look for explorer.exe for windows explorer

In both cases: right click the exe file and choose send to desktop or create shortcut to make the shortcut...don't drag and drop!

If your xp version has service pak 2 included then you can download service pak 3

As you cannot connect to win update go to the mobo or pc maker and download all the latest drivers and install them prior to going online incase your network or wireless drivers are not included in xp in this case hopefully you have the disks?

My reinstal foundered because i couldnt go online but luckily i had a third party usb wireless dongle that go me around the problem albeit with trial and error

Thanks for the replies. My Windows CD has SP2 and I have SP3 saved so I’ve managed to update that far but it’s the myriad of individual security updates that I can’t get to, maybe I don’t need to with SP3 installed. I can get online ok and the PC is performing well in that respect it’s just the Microsoft update site that I can’t access, maybe a glitch their end.

Yes it’s Windows Explorer I’m missing not IE. I’ll try to find explorer.exe on the C drive but I’m sure I’ve done that and it wasn’t there. I can still right click on folders under My Computer and use ‘explore’ so I can’t have deleted the application.

That's what I'm finding Chesters, I can get to the MS website via help and support but it says the server won't respond to XP operating system requests. I could try updating IE but I'm using Google Chrome at the moment and finding it a lot nicer. I have ZA free firewall and paid AVG 2011 anti-virus so may just stick with SP3 and leave it at that, apart from yesterday's hard drive failure my PC has been rock solid for seven years so I'm loathe to change to Windows 7, XP does what I need it to do.

Solved the Windows Explorer problem by doing a simple search for explorer.exe, once I found the folder I just sent it to my desktop.

Sorry my bad. Auto update servers don't work, but security patches and hot fixes are still available.

No bad Kiri, your advice re explorer worked, thank you.

Well here's a weird thing, after failing to connect manually to the MS server for XP updates the little yellow shield icon bottom right of screen popped up and told me updates were available for my computer, all 141 of them! I now have a PC with the OS as current as it can be running like a dream :) .
