Back casting rod.

Hi everyone.

I am after giving backcasting a go but don't want to splash out loads on a rod that I will only use a few times a year (when there are big seas and big leads are needed).

I've looked everywhere for a second hand backcasting rod but can't find one so was wondering if anyone knows if I can convert a diffrent rod to a backcaster by changing the ring patterns?

I was thinking a Ron Thompson Axellerator as these are not to expensive.

Does anyone know if this will work, and if this rod is long enough and suitable?

Thanks in advance! :D

Geoff,

you can backcast with virtually any rod, its a technique more than anything else. Specialist "backcasting" rods tend to have a fast tip action and be longer in length, say 14ft+ but its not essential. The reel seat position is normally set low so thats a consideration, i.e. if you convert a rod can you lower the reel seat or is it an adjustable one. The existing guides on most rods would be ample but because of the lower reel seat position you may need an additional but guide set lower than the existing. That`s about all you have to think of.

Thanks Stan, I thought you might be able to help.

Does fast tip action mean a stiff tip?

Not quite. Three main tip actions, fast / medium / slow. Fast means the main action of the rod, i.e. the main bending, is in approx. the top quarter of the rod. Medium action the bending is in the top half of the rod and slow action (often called progressive or parabolic) means the rod virtually bends all along its length, (apart from a few specialised rods slow also means you`ve got a crap blank) Sorry, could`nt resist that.

See Eltons new glossary page for definitions of rod actions. Now there`s a thing.

From what I've heard and read it is like a pendulum, , but with your back to the sea. So on the release you are firing it back over your shoulder and out to sea (not a great explanation I know but I haven't even attempted one myself yet).

I've been told it is good when you need to cast a heavy weight into an onshore wind.

Newt , thanks for the diagram.

Tel, do you use yours with a fixed spool down the butt and only a few rings up the top?

And what weight can you backcast with the axelerator?

Thanks everyone!

Geoff: quote:- Tel, do you use yours with a fixed spool down the butt and only a few rings up the top?

Be a bit careful on the "few rings up the top". All the line guides are there to evenly distribute the load along the length of the blank. Use only a few at the top and you run the risk of a problem. There was a perfect example yesterday on Discovery Real Time when an Aussie angler tried to haul a 7kg fish up a rock outcrop using his favourite surf rod "adapted" for the purpose with a few top guides. Even an Anubis aint desgned for that. End result was the nice two section rod suddenly became a five section rod. Blank distribution was no longer there, stress was all on the tip, and hey presto! a travel rod.
