Phone, yes, I'm sure he wanted to throw that gravel in!

The important thing was to catch a fish or two before he got bored. If his gear had been too crude we would have failed in that - it was a beginner's pond, lots of fish in it, but they'd all been caught many times and were surprisingly cute.

I always advise anglers not to let their kids fish ,within weeks they are catching while you sit without bites

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you

None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!

There is only one opinion i listen to ,its mine and its ALWAYS right even when its wrong

Its far easier to curse the darkness than light one candle

My Dad was in his shore fishing stage when I got interested in fishing so my first rod was a glass beach-caster paired with one of those little ABU multipliers (6000c?)

I used to practice casting in the hay meadow, after the hay was mown. The first rod I bought with my own money was a spinning rod, because as you say you can do just about anything with them. I still have that little ABU hollow glass spinning rod and it is still one of my favourite rods. I don't often leave the house to go fishing without it.

That's quite amazing. I started out the very same fishing from the rocks at Anstruther. It wasn't a beachcaster but it was a heavy 'coarse' rod of some kind that paired up nicely with a Penn multi. MY First rod bought with my own money was also a spinning rod. We began our fishing lives in a very similar fashion, don't you think?

I took Danny's sister Morgan fishing on Saturday. She's been asking for her go ever since Danny went, so with her and my sister visiting for the week we had a go. She's a tall, strong seven year old, dexterous, careful with her hands, and she listens and takes instruction well. She picked up casting immediately, and seemed to get the correct timing of releasing the line without having to be told. I picked a spot a rod length out, but she was casting halfway to the island with ease (and having to reel back in). She worked out for herself that the fish hide in the lily pads - maybe she got that from TV, but I was impressed. It wasn't as easy a catching pond as the one I took Danny to, but she still caught eight or nine little roach and perch and missed a lot of bites - as I explained, that's the challenge. Not squeamish about maggots and by the end of the day was putting them on the hook herself. Wants to go again!
