No, its not what you thought, not the usual "official" award, which varies in quality from Fred J Taylor's very well deserved one to those handed out to time-servers and dubbed by their colleagues as "Other Buggers Efforts".

No, this is an achievement that is all my own work - with assistance from my wife and minder, Norma.

It has been a long time coming, but at last I am here. It is the state of being "Over Bloody Eighty".

Fifty years ago, My life style might have led one to believe that I would be fortunate to reach retirement age, let alone become an octogenarian, but yet here I am, still mobile and catching river trout, still lucid (feel free to challenge that!) and still continent (you will have to take my word for that)

Anyway, part of the "still lucid" bit is down to AN members. Being deaf for the last twenty years means that normal conversation and repartee is denied to me. Exchanges on here fill that gap to a large extent. So thanks, Netsters, for the quality of debate and helping keep my mind active. Seeing off the odd troll adds a bit of spice to the exercise, but the vast majority out there in AN are a pretty decent bunch - so thanks for your contributions which enhance my quality of life.

I am off to catch a trout or two for breakfast, which will thus be a late one this morning. As Chevin would say, "catch you later"

Budgie - you gotta start that "clean living" thing pretty soon. I'd hate like hell to lose you too soon.

Dave - well done to you being active after 80+ years. I'm approaching 70 next year but I seriously doubt I could keep up with you now. I do think Norma has more than a little to do with it.

Do you have any major trips planned or are you going to stick with your UK fishing? I still have very fond memories of your taking Jan & I to some of your waters and showing us about UK tactics for fish other than carp. It was one of the highlights of Jan's life - learning to fish and feed with maggots and all the rest. Totally different than how we do things here where maggots are hard to find and super expensive if you can find a few.

All the best Dave, your an inspiration to be so active at you age.

Still plenty of time to pen another book and extend that species list.

Many happy returns Dave. As regards contributions to the forum you're right up there with the other 'pioneers', we whippersnappers have a lot of catching up to do.

Enjoy this weekend, the forecast looks good so even if the fish aren't playing ball it'll be a great way to spend a couple of days.

It's never a 'six', let's put it back
