Hi chaps. Perhaps we should stop releasing rainbow trout into waters all over the UK that they are not naitive to (NOTHING PERONAL JUST MAKING A POINT)....please correct me if im wrong but i think rainbows wer introduced into the UK and that includes Scotland a little over 100 yrs ago and that goes for all of the other non naitive spiecies of fish to the UK........ ALL THE BEST ZAPPAGOD

Am i missing something here Leon? The vagabonds were said to be introducing young and therefore i would guess small barbel. What was their point? Are they going to come back in ten years to fish?? Maybe I'm being thick.

yes, I would think so.

 

Probably barbel enthusiasts who aimed to establish a breeding population in the Loch.

I'm surprised that anyone uses ruffe as a pike bait! To be a usable size makes it practically record size!

 

Such behaviour does nothing for anglers.

There is no evidence that pike anglers introduced ruffe into Lomond.

 

Just a trout angler's uneducated theory that has become fact with retelling.

 

As Peter says, ruffe are just about the last fish that a pike angler would want to use as bait!

 

It's more likely that there is a natural colonisation route, that always failed, until increasing pollution levels in the Loch made it viable for the ruffe to establish themselves and quickly spread.

 

Just like the roach in Windemere perhaps.

No vagabond would spread barbel - they aren't even any good to eat demon

There is no excuse for introducing alien species anywhere.

 

But I suspect the LLAIA "balliffs" couldn't tell the difference between a young barbel and a gudgeon (which exist in large numbers & to a fairy impressive size on the Endrick).

 

it certainly doesn't do us any favours, especially with the legislative process underway in SEERAD at the moment. I suspect this discovery if not mistaken identity is some sneaky politicing.
