true but a lot of the compact cams don't allow for filter additions. you've got o own a bridge or dslr to make the most of that.

do people in general still use filters?

I know I throw on one occasionally with my dslr....Dad had a huge collection when he took his photography adult ed classes! got red fades, fake rainbows, lens flares and various other cool things! sometimes in nice to have these effects in the photo "live" instead of being artificially added in software afterwards.

I use UV, circular polarising, a variable ND filter and on the rare occasion an IR filter (must get my spare body properly converted one of the days) on the lenses but thats about it any other effects are added during post processing.
