Could be that the digital zoom works by the having the camera simply crop down the image thus reducing its size dramatically but appearing to zoom in on the subject in image (the same as cropping an image with photoshop) and as you had it set on the maximum zoom theres no doubt been an awful lot of cropping done hence the image being less than 1mb

It could be but on 50x optical the file size is only marginally bigger ,strange though the exif info states both as having the same pixel dimensions

Never was hot on pixels to me more and smaller seems logical but to camera makers a larger picture seems the way ,i would prefer far more detail than a picture as wide as a lorry with little

The number of pixels in a picture won't change with the focal length of the lens - i.e. zoom.

Pixel stuff

If you want detail - real detail - get closer - use less zoom.

Cheers ,i must admit my fuji e550 did take cracking pictures but big fat people dont creep they lumber so critters need a long lens to capture them before they run to the horizon .,if only someone would invent a digital gadget that could be placed where the film was in old cameras that converted it to digital my old pentax and lenses would be out like a shot ,instead they lie worthless in retirement in a trunk in the loft still thats progress

Snakey,

Very interesting, thanks for posting. I have a question. How does the focus of the human eye compare to the absolute focus of the digital. How can a digital be "softened" without manipulation on the computer. Most digital are two "hard" to my liking. Like everything is shot with ASA 25 film.

Smear Vaseline on your lens: that's your lens, not my lens. :)

good old trick that one! you can also use cling film which will give a similar effect...to get it on nice and smooth you can put a couple of drops of lighter fluid onto the lens first..apply the circle of cling film and hen smear it out smooth..the fluid will evaporate leaving the Clingfilm perfectly smooth.

You can buy screw on soft focus filters for your lenses if you like that effect (they get used a lot by some portrait photographers) personally I use software to produce a similar effect if I need to (I use the OnOne suite in conjunction either lightroom or PS)
