Not in the I.o.M now Chesters, retired to 28 miles further north across the Irish sea, the land of Whisky. I do miss the T.T. though couldn't get over in the boat this year as I knocked a rather large hole in the wall for patio doors and had to get that sorted.

Then you probably have seen them ,they do have a safety line occasionally but not always ,i presume some are less confident on vertical planes?

My mrs ancestors on her dads side come from there (kewley) purported to be a relation of the famous lifeboatman but i think they all are whether they are or not (wink)

always knew them as zebra jumping spiders: awesome lil beasties!

and as if by happy coincidence I was watching/ shooting them on sunday at sculthorpe! got a superb shot...but its at home on my ipad right now...however I do have this: filmed with my trusty iPhone @ 120fps

not perfect but does show the "safety" line and how the lil buggers jump!

Good footage ,i have never looked but is the safety line retracted somehow? I would think continually making silk would be expensive and you dont see it everywhere ,the only time you see single threads in numbers is in the autumn when some spiders "hang glide" to pastures new

My camera will do 480? FPs but probably not good enough to see little beasties

spider silk is biodegradable...they spin several different types of silk as well....

the safety line stuff tends to be ultra fine and will usually degrade very quickly. its not "expensive" to the spider at all!

its produced as a liquid gel and then hardened as it enters the spinnerets of which most spider have between 6 and 8 which are in pairs but not all spiders have all the glands...orb spiders have the most with two glands that cast the sticky webbing for their classic webs.. Most species can cast 7 or 8 times of silk for various purposes.
