Big rudd

Yes, it's a great thread and unlike most threads which seem to off the subject after about 5 messages, this one is staying true to form.

Slightly puzzled that they are within range of the bubble float but put of range with the waggler though. A 4 swan waggler would go loads further an a bubble float!

Keep trying and updating us, I'm loving this thread.

Ta folks, I'll keep at it, although I may end up with no hair and no rudd!

Arbocop it was a carp controller I was going to use rather than a bubble float. With the right rod, they go a long way.

I think you'll find them right in the margins after dark!

You could be right, the margins are very deep with very nice slopes (as you know!). Perhaps the back end of summer and into autumn, when the nights start pulling in a bit, might be worth some effort. I feel like I'm all over the place at the moment trying all sorts of mad things, hopefully something will start working at some point. I'd love to see one on the bank...

It might also be a good idea to try the deep margins after dark in the winter. I did well on a gravel pit in my youth with these tactics, both summer and winter. This was legering with bread crust popped up a couple of inches off the bottom.

Another possibility is an adjustable zig rig/sunken float paternoster - a slowly rising nymph can be especially deadly! Fishing like this with a PVA bag containing floating casters could well work. In my day it was a little more fiddly as we didn't have PVA and I had to use groundbait and floating casters.
