SUN JAN 29th 2006

Sunday saw members of the Whitby sea angling club travel to Scarborough where they managed to win the annual inter club bell trophy match. Poor conditions with a calm sea, clear water, and strong sunlight meant the going was tough. A total of 96 anglers fished representing teams from the Yorkshire coast. Only 9 fish were caught. Whitby's Dennis Thompson caught the only cod of the day, a fine fish of 10 pounds 13 ounces which is now the heaviest fish of the season to date. Dave Perret of Whitby managed a 14 ounce flounder and Dan Smith jnr landed a rockling weighing 6 ounces. The total weight of these 3 anglers was enough to beat that of all the other teams which meant Whitby returned home with the Bell Trophy.

Results for the Whitby team : 1st D Thompson 11-14(2), 2nd D Pertett 14 ounces (1), 3rd D Smith 6 ounces (1).

WED JAN 25th 2006

A moderate north to north easterly sea swell provided excellent conditions for codlings for Wednesdays match. This was reflected in the results with Rob Allison taking the lead in the heaviest bag of the year competition with 5 fish weighing a total of 27 pounds 11 ounces. Colin Stainthorpe eventually refound his form of previous seasons and returned to the scales with 4 fish weighing 9 pounds 5 ounces giving him second place on the night. Paul Kilpatrick continued a recent good run and took 3rd place with 1 fish weighing 7 pounds 4 ounces. Paul returned to the scales with a story of the one that got away, he reports having lost a near double figure fish which he decided to try lift out of the water using his rod rather than pick the fish out of the sea by hand, the fish simply fell off the hook and swam away.

Results : 1st R Allison 27-11(5), 2nd C Stonthorpe 9-5(4), 3rd P Kilpatrick 7-4(1), M Pitman 4-13(1), W Atkinson 4-5(1), D Perrett 3-10(1), A Cass 3-14(2).
