We used to dream of 'avin' a badger. We used to have to eat grass and take hormones if we wanted milk for us tea.

I remember it being delivered by horse and cart; in London, not out in the sticks.

Out in the East Sussex sticks it came on the back of the cart in a big vat with a tap - you had to supply your own jug and go out to the cart to get it filled.

North Norfolk was more up to date - bottled milk - cardboard caps, delivered round the village by a "Dot" motor tricycle (two wheels at the front) which was in effect a giant milk crate on wheels.

I've got a couple of those stashed away somewhere, complete with caps and the dairy's name on the bottle (and cap) found them under a floor whilst renovating a house in Islington.

Our milko's horse, Peggy, knew the drill, she just walked along the road on her own and stopped outside all the right houses while the milko delivered, can't remember his name, just the horse.

As a kid I had a Sunday job helping the local milkman deliver milk by horse and cart in the East End.

When the dairy went over to electric vehicles, the horses were sent to the knackers yard.

It broke Sid's heart saying goodbye to the animal he had worked with for years, delivering milk through all weathers, up at the crack of dawn 7 days a weeek.

yeh our milkies horse did the same, my old man used to give me a crust to feed the horse and often i had to follow it down the street hoping for it to drop some manure for the allotment.

my mind not only wanders-- sometimes it leaves completely.
