9 weight is right for pike and salt water fishing I guess.

Get a casting lesson for sure but get out on the water and start fishing, don't worry too much about distance and complex casting techniques for now you have plenty of time.

The great thing about fly fishing is that every time you manage a really good cast it gives you a buzz like catching a fish. It's similar to golf, you may have sliced your drive and you may not par the hole but you loved that perfect 6 iron shot into the green

exactly. my casting isn't perfect but everytime i go out fishing, i enjoy the friendly chat from others, learn and develop more and more confidence. keep at it and enjoy every minute and when it all comes together, it's magical.
