Bits and bobs First Pike

People don't usually fish for pike between March and October because their weights are low, a 20 in the summer is likely to be a mid 20 in Jan/Feb when they're building up to spawning. Just use some common sense and enjoy piking, I wouldn't rule it out in the summer but just be careful, get them in quick and get them back in the water as soon as poss (making sure they're ready to swim off and are strong).

I have never heard that come up in any discussion Neil, I doubt that is correct.

All I have heard is

1. summer isnt good for the pike.

2. theres other species to chase.

As for me. No. 2 applies

No.1 doesn't really apply as its Scotland and we only really get temps above 20c for about 1 week out of the entire summer :cold:

Andy,

US Fish and Wildlife

""""Size structure of northern pike captured in gill nets was highest during winter, when over 80% of the northern pike were caught. Size structure was lowest during summer and during the spring spawning period.""""

CPE (catch per effort) was also higher in winter. Our males rarely get over 8lbs - females 25 ish.

If you read bona fide pike literature the issue/fact of increased weights over winter come up all the time...it's common knowledge in the piking world.

Everyone's situation is different as we're all living in different places and fishing different waters, personally I've never had any issues fishing rivers for pike in the summer so will continue to do so.

I don't know what it is about pike and pike anglers, I'm starting to think that the PAC should evolve into a new body with the sole aim of banning all pike fishing and all other types of fishing that resemble pike fishing!

I know where your coming from Anderoo, I'm not a member of the pac and I don't go on the p&p forums anymore as the vibe was rather salty! I'm pretty much a full time piker but have no issue with people giving it a go..like all types of angling it's there to discover and enjoy!

Andy,

Just relating some "facts", now that it has come up, in response to your comment in post #22. Do with it what you wish.

Andy says in post #22, """"I have never heard that come up in any discussion Neil, I doubt that is correct."""" (Neil suggested weights are lower in the summer than in the winter)

dont twist things Phone, that snippet from post #22 was regarding this little snippet from Neil.

"People don't usually fish for pike between March and October because their weights are low"

I put across the idea (#22 & #27) that maybe people dont fish for them because its summer and they stick to the idea that summer isnt good for them or they were off catching other species or Neil is right in that case lets have a discussion about it.
