Zander fish-in - October

Anderoo

Recommended Posts

Thanks to Anderoo for organising a very enjoyable event. Thanks also to Rob for being good company and for volunteering to drive the boat. I ended up with three zander, two chunky ones and a tiddler. Retrospective photo/net analysis by Norma and Dave put my fish at 50cm, putting me out of the running for the Zander Trophy. I Think we struggled because our fish finder was inoperative and our drogue didn't seem to slow us down as much as others, but then if I had got my eye in earlier when we were getting more bites I could have converted more of them to fish! The post-fish curry and beers were most enjoyable and it was great to see everyone again.

Managed to cut my finger on Anderoo's stinger after we caught his and Tigger's lures on our drogue - carefully unhooked them with pliers and then got a bit careless chucking them back - those Owner hooks are vicious! Then that had just about stopped bleeding when I fumbled a zander I was about to torpedo back and caught it spiky side down. Ouch!

I was after the smallest zed record not sure if this one wins IMG_0585_zpsad84f2fe.jpg Curry post match was great and yes we finished early but only coz the boat partner was moaning about passing out through hunger....IMG_0591_zps1d355295.jpg IMG_0590_zps06d08b08.jpg I had another tiny one IMG_0588_zps1d48d86c.jpg 3 normal size and a small perch Rusty didn`t measure his fish....or unhook it...or indeed even touch it coz he was scared then it flipped off the unhooking woopy cushion and back into the lake before he could measure it so he guessed...Oh and he keeps his centrepins in a case would you trust someone who does that???? IMG_0579_zps3aa63b0c.jpg realy good to meet a few new faces and tigger top top bloke if a bit bonkers . Anderoo big thank you for organising had a great day and evening over indulging in beer and curry . JV I think you won the smallest zed prize, congrats! Rich will be gutted, he fancied his chances again this year...!

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Firstly thanks to Anderoo for organising the fish-in and thanks to JV44 for driving us there and back, it's always great to meet up with AN'ers and I thoroughly enjoyed the trip out.

Our day can best be described as eventful. We pitched up at buoy 11 to begin with and there were immediate indications that fish were present. The taps were frequent enough to suggest we were working the lures properly and after half an hour or so I caught the first zander, it was a savage take.

I’ll have to ‘fess up at this point. Steve landed and unhooked the fish and being mindful of the need to get it back quickly we didn’t bother with a pic. Just as I was getting the tape measure out the fish went mad and flipped itself back into the water so it’s true that I didn’t even get to touch it. It had been resting on my cushion so we had a mental picture of how long it was and just measured the cushion. 62cm was about right but the process was flakey at best so I can’t put it forward for the longest fish award.

We were jubilant, we didn’t think that I might have fluked a decent example so early and looked forward to catching fish of that stamp all day. It wasn’t to be I’m afraid, I caught two more at about 40cm and Steve seemed to latch on to the tiddlers (small perch too).

We found the tower nearest the dam to be a hotspot, the water was deep at around 80ft and because there were no other features in the water when the cheapo fishfinder indicated fish we were confident they were there (bargain of the week that device, short battery life though). We drifted that area several times and that’s where I picked up the two smaller zander. These bites were different, the take was when the lure was being gently lowered, the only indication was a tiny pluck and the lure hitting bottom before it should have done.

When the wind got up in the afternoon we really started to struggle, we couldn’t get the drift slow enough and holding bottom became difficult even with 50g jigheads. We’d cast out and as the lure came back to us we’d get a minute or so of the line being vertical but then it would go under the boat and we’d have to keep paying out more line. We weren’t using wire so were reluctant to fish shallower more sheltered areas for fear of being bitten off by pike, it’s probably fair to say that bites dried up for us during the latter half of the day.

By 5:00pm and after one dash for port to avoid what looked like the mother of all storms we decided to call it a day, the lure of a hotel bar, a hot bath and then dinner was too strong to resist. So we need to decide who gets the trophy, Matthew with a measured 57cm fish or Tigger with pics of one that looks just as impressive? I’ll leave them to argue it out.

I'm quite impressed that, following Steve's total inability to maintain control over a potential trophy winner, that we weren't treated to a detailed discourse on how to slow down the boat by attaching a boat partner to a spare set of drogue ropes - I think under the circumstances he should have at least volunteered to do this and swim into the wind thereby slowing the drift to perfection!

Tigger's fish, I have say, looks bigger than mine - much as it grieves me given that he's a northerner ;-)
