Norma and I had a couple of days birding after the fish in, and have only just now reached home.

Like Steve Walker we had trouble with our depth finder - the gunwale was too thick for our Humminbird mounting clamp.

However, despite being "thwarted" (or should that be "gunwaled"?) and having to fish "blind" I thought we ought to have had more takes than we did, as we watched where the others drifted and followed them down a few times. We both had a zander, we both missed a couple of takes, I had a perch and Norma a small pike.

One of my missed takes was a really savage wrench, caused the clutch on my little ABU 3000 multiplier to really scream - I put it down to a decent sized pike or perhaps a big trout. An involuntary release after just two seconds playing time.

The fact that we had pike and perch as well as zander suggests we were not fishing the lures in a style selective for zander, or perhaps not at the right depth - most of the time we allowed the lures to hit bottom at intervals, then fish about four feet up. A fish finder to indicate shoals of fish would have been useful, but ours lay useless in the bottom of the boat.

Anyway, we did catch, and although the zander didn't fight much both the perch and the pike did, and it was a most enjoyable trip.

Thanks to whoever found "Memories of India" - it was a superb meal, certainly one of the better Indian restaurants, and thanks to Anderoo for organising us all.

The birding trips on Rutland water produced a huge variety of birds, although nothing unusual, apart from a rook laying into a swan mussel which was quite amusing - attempted opportunist feeding, although it didn't seem able to break the shell whilst we were watching.

Here are a few pics - just click to get them full size

Vagabond I meant to ask you at dinner, but the conversation moved on and I forgot. You mentioned fishing in Hong Kong. Did you bag that small species which can be seen nibbling at the surface of the jetties?

You had four in total, Steve!

I managed to sneak another when I went back out to even the scores. ;)

Thanks to Anderoo for organising a very enjoyable event. Thanks also to Rob for being good company and for volunteering to drive the boat. I ended up with three zander, two chunky ones and a tiddler. Retrospective photo/net analysis by Norma and Dave put my fish at 50cm, putting me out of the running for the Zander Trophy. I Think we struggled because our fish finder was inoperative and our drogue didn't seem to slow us down as much as others, but then if I had got my eye in earlier when we were getting more bites I could have converted more of them to fish! The post-fish curry and beers were most enjoyable and it was great to see everyone again.

Managed to cut my finger on Anderoo's stinger after we caught his and Tigger's lures on our drogue - carefully unhooked them with pliers and then got a bit careless chucking them back - those Owner hooks are vicious! Then that had just about stopped bleeding when I fumbled a zander I was about to torpedo back and caught it spiky side down. Ouch!
