the microsoft antispyware app takes some beating.

spybot and spyware blaster are pretty good too. while you're sorting that out, put adaware on too, then you'll be a lot safer

Just make sure you keep them updated. The Microsoft Antispyware is unfortunately no longer available for download although existing systems should continue to work and be updated for a while.

 

They replaced it with Windows Defender. Also free but only works with updated Windows systems so XP needs SP2, 2000 needs SP4, and 2003 needs SP1. Otherwise it won't load.

I use Ewido, which is free for 14 days in the full version, which includes real -time scanning, and still works as a manual scanner after the trial period ends. Make sure you download the latest definition files before you run a scan though.
