Norfolk fish and other fauna

Just had a week or so in Norfolk

One or two pics and a partial species list

Here is a fish that used to be common almost everywhere, but rarely seen or caught these days

Fewer (and smaller) fish than last year, but my 10-y-o Texan grand-daughter did manage to catch roach, rudd, gudgeon, bream, perch and eels to add to her 3lb tench from Sussex.

...and learnt to row.

Those two girls were adept at spotting water voles also, and Chinese water Deer.

Specially for Barry. We caught those "endangered" eels from the Rivers Ant, Bure and Yare - and just like last year could only avoid them by not fishing maggot or worm anywhere near the bottom.

...plus a good bird list, marsh harrier, white stork, ruffe (the bird as well as the fish) and all the usual suspects.

The system won't let me load any more pics, so I will post more later in the thread

...and the third White Stork (about 50 yards away from the other two)

There have been reports of a single stork in years past which many assume was an escape from a private collection.

However, three together suggests a pair with a youngster - the status given in the literature for White Stork is "rare visitor to Norfolk" so it would be of interest if this really was a pair that had bred in Norfolk.

Note the other white bird in the picture - it is a Little Egret - another fairly recent coloniser of the UK

..and a chain ferry on the River Yare

...and not forgetting the intellectual development of these grandchildren, a chess masterclass watched by grandson No 4

By age ten, her mother was annihilating grammar school opposition and finished up a couple of years later as British girls under-14 Champion. This one shows promise also.

..plus how to hold a perch without getting spiked

Is that the wind pump down near How Hill?

Yes -

The storks were a real bonus. We were on the lookout for cranes also, but didn't see any. Last year we saw the cranes at Lakenheath, and also saw a family of cranes down on the Severn

I have also seen Cranes in South Yorkshire I believe there are some nesting in the vicinity of the Fairburn Ings reserve. Didnt Storks once nest on the chimney pots in Edinburgh?

Just got back from one of Norfolk's finest walks - Great Yarmouth to Reedham along the Breydon river walls and there's a pair of Spoonbills in the area just East of the Berney Arms.

They were actually on the freshwater drainage lagoons on the marsh side.

Too far away for the ol iPhone.

First time I've ever seen them in this country!

Apparently as recently as the 1850's there used to be a huge Heronry and 'Spoonbillery' at Reedham.

Perhaps this is the start of the comeback??
